What is resilience and why do you need to get yourself some? Part II

Following on from the previous blog What is resilience and why do you need to get yourself some?, and because of the way in which this topic has resonated with so many of you, I thought you might appreciate some step-by-step guidance, not only on how to develop emotional resilience for yourself, but how you can model it for your children or any loved ones you might be concerned about.

The first thing you need to know is that building resilience is a lot like building muscles.

  • It doesn’t happen overnight
  • You have to stretch yourself
  • Sometimes it hurts
  • You have to do it regularly in order to get the results you are looking for
  • If you want to maintain your strength you need to schedule certain exercises into your lifestyle so that you continue to go from strength to strength, and

the big bonus is

  • You start feeling stronger almost straight away and it gets better with every workout

So, let’s get started.

Speaking of strength, a great exercise to start out with, and build on regularly, is to identify the strengths you already have.

I really encourage you to take 10 minutes out of your day today to consider the following questions:

Do you believe you have strengths?

Are you comfortable with identifying what they are?

Can you be honest with yourself about what your strengths are?

Or do you feel like you can’t own your strengths?

How many strengths can you list right now?

Here are some prompts for you.  Let’s aim for at least 10.

What are you good at?

What have you achieved in the past?

What have others told you they appreciate about you?

What have you survived?

How have you helped others?

What are you proud of?

I encourage you to list as many strengths as you can, and then put your list close to where you spend most of your time so that you can constantly be reminded of your awesomeness.  It’s also good to keep close by so that you can add to it as things come to mind.  You’ll be amazed at how this exercise can boost your confidence and help you to handle life’s challenges more successfully.

Don’t worry if you find this hard to start with.  Just be willing to see your strengths and keep looking for things to add to the list.

What is resilience and why do you need to get yourself some?

Why survive when you can thrive?  Good question huh?  I don’t know anyone who chooses to “just get by” when the means to thrive are present.  Problem is, we don’t always know how best to make that shift.

Resilience is “the ability to adapt well in the face of adversity, threats and significant sources of stress. Resilience is not something that is innate to some and not to others. Resilience is a trait that can be learned by everyone. It involves the ability to manage our thoughts, behaviors, and actions”. ~ Bruna Martinuzzi

Resilience can also be defined as a set of skills that often mean the very difference between surviving and thriving.

How well do you adapt in the face of adversity?  How do you respond to perceived threats and stressful situations?  What skills do you have to help you manage your thoughts, your behaviours and your actions?

How do you react to life’s challenges?

Do you have wobblies, get anxious, manipulate, cry, fall apart, withdraw, get loud, become violent or get depressed?

Do you feel like you are out of control at times?  Drowning?  Do you take your feelings out on the people around you?

Or do you respond to life by giving thought to how you will manage yourself in any given situation and respond in helpful, mature ways, trusting that you can manage whatever comes your way?

If you don’t already have resilience, you can learn resilience, and I can teach you.
