What is Resilience and Why Do You Need To Get Yourself Some? Part III

Further to my previous posts on resilience and why you need to get some, Part I and Part II, I would like to talk about the importance of strategically stretching yourself through goal-setting.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to deliver a resilience program to 4 groups of young men aged 12 – 18 last year, and I wanted to share part of that experience with you.

They were a diverse group of young men from a range of cultures and backgrounds, and all displaying a broad variety of physical, intellectual and emotional capabilities.

To say that I was constantly challenged to put the skills I was teaching into practice, is probably an accurate description of my own personal experience of the program.

More than that, however, I was honoured that many of these young men allowed me into their inner circles, from where I was able to witness their growth over the course of the program.

I had never run a program quite like that before, and I felt I was definitely stretching myself when I agreed to facilitate it, but we did it, and it was a huge success on many levels.

You can read what others had to say about the program here.

In Part II I discussed the importance of knowing your strengths and keeping your achievements within your view to remind you of your awesomeness.  This can be really difficult for some people, and it is a great idea to revisit the exercise time and again and add to the lists as you grow in strength and confidence.

Stretching yourself outside of your comfort zone is another important part of building resilience, and this is where I, and many of the young men in this program grew greatly during our time together.

It is important to do this in meaningful ways, but we don’t have to take giant leaps of faith from the outset.  Small steps in the right direction are probably best because they can be monitored and managed so much better, and actually bring about a sense of excitement rather than making us feel like we have immersed ourselves in a sea of fear and dread in which we are going to drown for sure.

After taking stock of their lives, most of the young men chose to set goals that would make the biggest difference to them at that point in their lives.  Getting a part time job, giving their studies more attention, repairing a broken relationship, or rekindling a hobby that brought great joy to them were among some of those goals, and while they might not sound like a lot to us, these were enormous to them, without being so big that they didn’t believe they could achieve them.

This is an important fact about using goal setting to stretch yourself and build resilience:

You have to set a goal that you believe you can achieve and in doing so set yourself up for success.

I knew when I committed to deliver this program that I had the skills and qualifications to do it.  I also had amazing people around me for support and encouragement, so it was safe for me to stretch myself in this way, and a safe bet that it would be a successful experience for all involved.

Climbing ladder

Once you have achieved your goal, you can set another one, and another one, and another one, and each and every success becomes like a new rung in your ladder to a higher, healthier self-esteem.

Can you imagine what sort of a difference that would make to you in your life right now?

Think about setting one goal that means something to you – ideally it will be something small that you have been avoiding or putting off – and I want you to commit to achieving it.

Think through the people, knowledge or resources you will need to achieve your goal and then go about taking the steps you need to achieve it.

Finally, I want you to let me know when you’ve done it.  I really want to hear about your experience.

Go go go…

Are You Feeling The Love?

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone.

Are you one of those people who loves Valentine’s Day and everything that goes with it?

Or are you one of those people who cringes at the very thought of Valentine’s Day?

This year my husband and I are enjoying our 25th Valentine’s Day together and we both acknowledge that we take a great deal for granted when it comes to loving and being loved.  However, we both believe that this is the beauty of being in a long-term, committed relationship with someone who continues to earn your respect, your admiration and your trust, day in and day out.

Five things I know I can take for granted include:

  • Being held – really held – every single day
  • Early morning kisses as my partner leaves for work
  • The truth when I need to hear it
  • Companionship from someone whose company I love
  • Lots of laughter

Loving Couple

It is really important to feel special in your relationship.  To know that you are your partner’s #1 helps you to walk taller in a world where not everyone is your friend.

Having someone to come home to at the end of a hard day is such a huge comfort, and even better is having someone to come home to with whom you can celebrate your greatest achievements.

I have been so fortunate in my life to enjoy the love of a really good man for more than 25 years now, so, I have decided to run a special promotion on my 2 part coaching intensive.

You Can Heal Your Love Life In Just 2 Weeks.

Normally $195, I am taking limited bookings at just $160 because it’s Valentine’s Day and I really want to spread the lurve.  This offer will only be available until midnight Sunday 17th February.

So call me! Call me now!  Seriously.

Know that whatever it is you want to change about your love life, you will gain great insight through this program.

What is resilience and why do you need to get yourself some? Part II

Following on from the previous blog What is resilience and why do you need to get yourself some?, and because of the way in which this topic has resonated with so many of you, I thought you might appreciate some step-by-step guidance, not only on how to develop emotional resilience for yourself, but how you can model it for your children or any loved ones you might be concerned about.

The first thing you need to know is that building resilience is a lot like building muscles.

  • It doesn’t happen overnight
  • You have to stretch yourself
  • Sometimes it hurts
  • You have to do it regularly in order to get the results you are looking for
  • If you want to maintain your strength you need to schedule certain exercises into your lifestyle so that you continue to go from strength to strength, and

the big bonus is

  • You start feeling stronger almost straight away and it gets better with every workout

So, let’s get started.

Speaking of strength, a great exercise to start out with, and build on regularly, is to identify the strengths you already have.

I really encourage you to take 10 minutes out of your day today to consider the following questions:

Do you believe you have strengths?

Are you comfortable with identifying what they are?

Can you be honest with yourself about what your strengths are?

Or do you feel like you can’t own your strengths?

How many strengths can you list right now?

Here are some prompts for you.  Let’s aim for at least 10.

What are you good at?

What have you achieved in the past?

What have others told you they appreciate about you?

What have you survived?

How have you helped others?

What are you proud of?

I encourage you to list as many strengths as you can, and then put your list close to where you spend most of your time so that you can constantly be reminded of your awesomeness.  It’s also good to keep close by so that you can add to it as things come to mind.  You’ll be amazed at how this exercise can boost your confidence and help you to handle life’s challenges more successfully.

Don’t worry if you find this hard to start with.  Just be willing to see your strengths and keep looking for things to add to the list.

Go! Go! Go!

What is resilience and why do you need to get yourself some?

Why survive when you can thrive?  Good question huh?  I don’t know anyone who chooses to “just get by” when the means to thrive are present.  Problem is, we don’t always know how best to make that shift.

Resilience is “the ability to adapt well in the face of adversity, threats and significant sources of stress. Resilience is not something that is innate to some and not to others. Resilience is a trait that can be learned by everyone. It involves the ability to manage our thoughts, behaviors, and actions”. ~ Bruna Martinuzzi

Resilience can also be defined as a set of skills that often mean the very difference between surviving and thriving.

How well do you adapt in the face of adversity?  How do you respond to perceived threats and stressful situations?  What skills do you have to help you manage your thoughts, your behaviours and your actions?

How do you react to life’s challenges?

Do you have wobblies, get anxious, manipulate, cry, fall apart, withdraw, get loud, become violent or get depressed?

Do you feel like you are out of control at times?  Drowning?  Do you take your feelings out on the people around you?

Or do you respond to life by giving thought to how you will manage yourself in any given situation and respond in helpful, mature ways, trusting that you can manage whatever comes your way?

If you don’t already have resilience, you can learn resilience, and I can teach you.

Feng Shui and The Secret (Ancient Chinese) Law of Attraction

I was taught that the Chinese believe there are 3 main areas to our lives, and that each of these areas accounts for an equal third of our lives.  They are:

  1. Heaven Luck
  2. Man Luck
  3. Earth Luck
Heaven Luck encompasses the things in life that we have no control over.
Man Luck encompasses ourselves as individuals, and includes our physical and mental health, our beliefs and our attitudes.
Earth Luck encompasses our environment.

What I find most interesting, however, is the belief that the more we work on our Man Luck and our Earth Luck, the better our Heaven Luck is likely to be.

What one thing can you do right now that will improve your Heaven Luck?

Who Do You Think You Are?

As I was meditating this morning, and reveling in the joy that I always feel when I go to the stillness,

I wondered why more people didn’t practice meditation regularly.

I love meditating.

This is the space where I am all things and no thing all at once, and I remember that

THIS IS WHO I AM.

I am not what I do.

I am who I am, and who I am is astonishing, amazing, limitless, joy, love, powerful, peaceful, magical, pure, whole, and so much more.

So, who do you think you are?

Feng Shui, Qi, Dr Masaru Emoto and Why you Should Not Sleep in a Water Bed.

At our very first Feng Shui Discovery Class on Monday night, we talked about our understanding of Feng Shui.  It seems there are so many ways of describing it and every one of those descriptions would be right.

Feng Shui is the study of energy or qi.  It is both an art and a science and the reason we study it is so that we can manipulate it to our advantage.

Feng is wind which moves qi.

Shui is water which holds qi.

Feng Shui then becomes the balancing act between moving and holding energy and this is both literal and metaphoric in its application.

It is easy for most people to accept that wind moves qi.  But some people have trouble grasping how water can literally hold qi.

The best way I could demonstrate how water holds Qi was to talk about the work of Dr Masaru Emoto who collected water from various locations, subjected that water to a variety of external factors, froze that water and then photographed it.

Watch the Video to see the results of Dr Emoto’s work.  You will be amazed.

Beginnings and Endings – Happy 2012

I love the New Year, and the days and weeks leading up to it, because it is always so full of promise.  Possibilities seem endless and I love coming up with new and exciting ways to imagine the year ahead.

The thing is though, if nothing changes, nothing changes.

In other words, if you love your life just the way it is, and you want to experience the same things you have always experienced, then that’s just fine, and you shouldn’t change a thing.

If you want to experience new and exciting things, however, you have to change something.  Remember the definition of insanity?  It’s doing the same things over and over again while expecting a different result.

Perhaps you know exactly what you want from 2012, but perhaps you haven’t got a clue yet, so I’ve attached a link that will take you to a list of questions that will help you to define the types of experiences you want to have, and the changes you will need to make in order to have them.   There’s nothing like an outstanding question to bring about an outstanding answer.

Beginnings and Endings – Louise L. Hay – Heal Your Life.

Happy New Year everyone!

Meet Louise

One of my most inspirational mentors is Louise Hay. I first read You Can Heal Your Life in the early 90’s and have been continually astounded ever since by the accuracy of “The List” that rests quietly in the latter part of her book. In fact, I have referred to it so often I just about know every thought pattern behind every ailment on the “List”.

Apparently, the information was collected over a 2 year period in Louise’s counselling work life when she recorded her clients’ physical conditions as well as the correlating emotional issues they presented with.  After collating the information she had collected, Louise noticed a lot of similarities , and voila, “The List” was created.

Further to the similarities that existed between the various physical and emotional states, Louise found that there was another similarity that lied beneath every dis-ease – be it physical or emotional – and that was a feeling of not being good enough.

Someone else who has been a great inspiration to me in my life once said:

“The truth is what the truth is and we can’t help but recognise it when we see it.”

This is what I experience when I work with “The List” and with the processes that Louise refers back to time and again in order to bring healing to anyone and everyone who takes the time to do the work and build awareness of their own limiting beliefs.

If something isn’t working in your life, there is a lie that is holding you back from being everything you were meant to be.  Email me at deb@debfay.com.au to find out how you can move on.

Are you drowning in Clutter

After reading Louise’s meditation for November 12 Louise L. Hay – Daily Meditations – November 12, 2011 – Heal Your Life I was compelled to inspire you with some clutter clearing tips and tricks.

Clutter can be defined in the following ways:

  1. Spaces that are consistently untidy and disorganised
  1. A collection of too many items in too small a space
  1. A collection of broken or unused items
  1. A collections of items that we don’t necessarily like or worse that have negative memories attached to them
  1. Unfinished business of any kind.

Clutter is stagnant qi and it’s our biggest enemy as it impedes the flow of energy in our homes and in our lives, and depending on how much we have, it can literally stop us in our tracks.

Your home or work environment can appear to be clean, tidy and organised and still have lots of clutter lurking in drawers, cupboards and filing cabinets. Here’s a few ways in which clutter in your environment can manifest in your life:

  • A build up of clutter on someone’s floor can indicate depression.
  • A build up of clutter around the centre of a home can indicate a block in the flow of joy in a person’s life, weight gain and heart problems.
  • A build up of clutter up high can indicate an inability to think straight and headaches.
  • Clutter in your south east might be blocking the flow of good fortune.
  • Clutter in your south west might be blocking your ability to obtain and / or sustain an intimate relationship.
  • Clutter in your south might be getting in the way of that promotion you’ve been working towards.
  • Clutter in your west might be blocking your creativity and your usual ability to find solutions to any problems you might be experiencing.  There isn’t anywhere you can hide clutter where it won’t have an adverse affect on your life.

Bottom Line is that if you’re not adequately processing the “things” in your home, then you aren’t adequately processing the “things” in your life.

Clutter Clearing is an ongoing process of ensuring that the qi or energy in your home and in your life doesn’t become stagnant and start to drag you down.

Happy Clutter Clearing
